A class on the floor

What you do in Denim 101

Denim 101 is a single day at 158 Corbin Ave, 10 AM to 4:45 PM, with lunch. It is not a lecture in a rented room: it runs on the floor of a working commercial washhouse, on the machines that finish denim for brands you already own.

The morning

How denim is made, and the vocabulary that goes with it: warp and weft, ring-spun and open-end, weight, selvedge, sanforizing. Then the wet and dry processes used in commercial washhouses, what each one does, and what it costs in water and time. Then a tour of the floor with the machines running.

The afternoon

Hands on. Stone washing, over-dyeing, enzyme washing, pigment spraying, hand sanding, grinding, tacking and lasering — on garments you bring yourself. Used denim works better than raw; wovens, knits, leather, accessories and sneakers all go through the machines too.

What you take home

Your own pieces, finished, plus the start of BPD Certification: complete Denim 101, Garment Dyeing and Knits and you have a certificate you can share.

Practical

Ten people maximum. $750 a seat for individuals. Teams of seven to ten are $650 a person and can take a private date. A date runs once four people have joined, and joining is free until then, so nobody pays for a class that isn't running.

See the next dates.
